Advantages of CNC Machining Center

Minimal No Waste

CNC machining is not only efficient, but it can also minimize material wastage thanks to its precision and accuracy. As long as the part is designed properly in the computer, the machine itself will almost never make faulty cuts, so there will be fewer damaged parts to discard. The machine can handle precise cuts and angles without generating much waste.

CNC Machining Is More Accurate

One of the major CNC machining benefits is accuracy. Because CNC machines receive precise instructions from a computer — and the movements are similarly carried out under computer control — their results will be identical each time and will match the computer model closely. This is a huge advantage when it comes to creating parts with tight tolerances. This capability almost entirely eliminates human error from the equation.

More Rapid and Effective

Another industry-cornering CNC machining benefit is the inherent speed and efficiency of production. CNC machines are capable of producing products much more quickly and efficiently than traditional methods. Many modern units can even load the billet and unload the completed product without human intervention. Naturally, this capability leads to significant cost savings and increased productivity. In addition, this sort of automation makes parts more consistent.

CNC Machining Makes Assembly Faster

Products whose components are created under computer numerical control are simpler to assemble. Because CNC machining is so precise and consistent, companion parts will fit together exactly as they do on the computer. And since the process is quicker than manual machining, you’ll spend less time waiting for parts to be completed. Unless there is a problem in the computer model, all parts should fit together perfectly. This capability can save a lot of time and money in the assembly process, as there is no need for extensive fitting and adjustment.

CNC Machining Uses Little Energy

CNC machining uses less electricity than older processes, thereby reducing energy consumption. In fact, according to the EPA, CNC machining uses about one-seventh of the energy of traditional machining methods. There are multiple reasons; CNC machines not only work quickly but draw less power per minute than most other manufacturing methods.

Reduce Production Costs

CNC machining is an economical, efficient, and precise process of manufacturing parts and products. CNC machining also uses fewer raw materials in comparison to conventional machining. Focusing your shop around CNC technology will drastically reduce errors, production expenditures, and product costs.

Primary Axes of CNC Machining Center

Machining centers are equipped with multiple axes that enable precise and complex movements. Each axis is responsible for a specific type of motion, allowing the machining center to perform a wide range of operations.

◆ X-Axis
Function: Manages the horizontal movement of either the cutting tool or the worktable.
Purpose: Essential for lateral positioning, enabling precise cuts along the horizontal plane. This axis is fundamental in defining the width of the workpiece being machined.

◆ Y-Axis
Function: Oversees the front-to-back movement of the cutting tool or the worktable.
Purpose: Crucial for controlling depth, the Y-axis ensures accurate positioning along the vertical plane perpendicular to the X-axis. It defines the depth of features machined into the workpiece.

◆ Z-Axis
Function: Regulates the vertical movement of the cutting tool or the worktable.
Purpose: Key for controlling height, this axis moves the tool up and down, allowing for precise depth control in drilling and milling operations. It defines the vertical position of the tool relative to the workpiece.

◆ A-Axis
Function: Facilitates rotational movement around the X-axis.
Purpose: Allows for angular adjustments and complex contouring. This axis is particularly useful in multi-axis machining, enabling the tool to approach the workpiece from various angles.

◆ B-Axis
Function: Governs rotational movement around the Y-axis.
Purpose: Enhances the versatility of the machining center by enabling rotational positioning around the horizontal plane. This axis is often used in advanced machining centers for five-axis machining, providing additional flexibility in tool orientation.

◆ C-Axis
Function: Controls rotational movement around the Z-axis.
Purpose: Critical for rotational positioning around the vertical axis. This axis is frequently used in turning centers and complex milling operations to rotate the workpiece, allowing for intricate geometries and precise machining of cylindrical features.

Manufacturing Possibilities of CNC Machining

Another way by which we can categorize CNC machining application of numerical control is by the manufacturing possibilities and uses. CNC machining is very useful in the following areas:

Rapid Prototyping
CNC machines have fast turnarounds because they are highly autonomous. Once a digital design is complete, machinists can send them to the CNC machine and fabricate them in a short space of time. This makes CNC machining highly useful for prototype machining. The application of CNC lathe is robust, regardless of the method used for the machining of the final component.

Production
CNC machining is precise enough to create high-quality components for the end-use application of numerical control. The material versatility of this process allows for the fabrication of a wide variety of parts. Overall, CNC machining is a cost-effective manufacturing process for many projects. Regardless of size or scope, several industries use the manufacturing process to create usable final parts.

Tooling
In addition to being an excellent direct manufacturing process, CNC machining is an indirect manufacturing process to aid processes like injection molding. It helps to machine various steels and robust aluminum. The machined parts such as metal molds can be filled with other materials to create products in large quantities.

Hybrid Manufacturing
CNC machining does not have to be used independently of another manufacturing process. Combining it with other processes like 3D printing or metal casting can lead to superior parts and products.

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM)
CNC automation enables electrical discharge machining (EDM) in two ways. It allows vertical EDM requiring electrodes with a similar shape and size as the cavity to be carved out. The other type of EDM is the Wire EDM. This type helps to create the punch and die combinations for different die sets used in metal and plastic fabrication.

How Handling CNC Machine Failures

CNC machines are reliable, but unexpected failures can happen. Programming errors, improper tools, excessive vibration, or a lack of routine maintenance are a few causes. When it comes to CNC machine safety in the event of a failure, keep these tips in mind.

Don’t Panic

Immediately stop the machine using the E-stop button.

Assess the Situation

Determine the cause of the failure, such as an equipment jam, and whether it presents an immediate danger.

Report and Repair

Report the failure to the appropriate personnel, who must follow lockout/tagout procedures before attempting any repairs.

FAQ

Q: What are the classification of machining centers?

A: Machining centers can be broadly classified into three types based on their structure: horizontal, vertical, and gantry types. The horizontal type—the first to be developed—can be defined simply as a machine where the spindle to which the cutting tool is attached is mounted horizontally (or parallel to the floor).

Q: What are your CNC machining capabilities?

A: Our own internal processing capabilities: Five-Axis CNC 16 Units, Four-Axis CNC 12 Units, Three-Axis CNC 27 Units, CNC Milling & Turning 16 Units. If you have larger processing needs, we can also meet them.

Q: What's the CNC Machining Process?

A: The CNC machining process begins by designing a part in CAD software. This design is then converted into a set of machine commands using CAM software. The CNC machine reads these commands to precisely cut and shape the material, producing a finished part that matches the digital design.

Q: What are the maximum size ranges of your machine travel?

A: Maximum Dimensions (3-axis milling): 1500*800*300mm, 1270×508×635 (mm).
Maximum Dimensions (5-axis milling): 4000*400*150mm, 750x1150x550mm.
600*600*600mm, 500*500*450mm, 500*310*200mm.
Worktable Diameter Φ400 mm. All can be processed, and larger sizes can also be consulted by engineers

Q: What kind of surface finish does CNC machining leave?

A: Once the machining process is complete, the CNC parts surface will have slight visible tool marks, called "as-machined" or "as-milled" surface finish. Machined surface roughness (Ra) is standardized at 1.6-3.2 μm, and surface finish requirements can be increased to 0.8-1.6 μm or higher at 0.2-0.8 μm, however, this will require more operating time and higher costs.
